Why scan to so high a resolution ?
By scanning at 4000dpi someone using 35mm will be able to print at up to A3+ size without interpolation giving a photographic quality print at up to this size.
What if I don't want such a big file ?
No Problem, we can tailor scan sizes to suit the application you wish to use. For example if you want to use the scans for web use, much smaller files are needed and are saved in a different way. Medium format users frequently want files that enable them to print to a given size; this can reduce the file size with the roll film scans to a more easily manageable level and can be done on request.
How are the files saved to CD ?
We usually save the files in Adobe 1998 colour space as this larger gamut space is better for retaining colour fidelity for printing. Files are saved as TIFFs and uncompressed and in PC byte order. If you are a Mac user please let us know when ordering so we can save your files for a Mac.
Why do scans look flat sometimes on my screen ?
This can happen if your application is set to sRGB mode. This is quite common and can be changed using Photoshop by the Edit>Colour Settings command and changing to Adobe colour (1998) in the RGB working space box. It is also important to calibrate your screen. This can be done simply by using the Adobe Gamma control and by following the on screen instructions if you are an Adobe user.
Do you make any corrections to the image when scanning ?
We aim to produce a neutral colour scan and optimise the histogram to give maximum data on the file. Obvious colour casts are not removed as many photographers use this as an effect.
Are monochrome or infra-red negatives able to be scanned ?
Yes, but if they are traditional emulsions (ie Delta 100 , FP4 etc) the Digital ICE filter used on colour work cannot be employed. This may mean that small imperfection on the negative such as dust specks will have to be removed prior to printing. We scan monochrome images in RGB to maximise file data. Please note that modern chromogenic emulsions (ie Kodak T400CN) can use the Digital ICE filter successfully.
How soon will I get my CDs back ?
We aim to complete most orders within 48 hours. Large orders will however take longer but we will be pleased to give a completion date on these on request.
Can I specify names you give files on the CD ?
As long as they are alpha-numeric and contain no more than 6 letters or numbers and are marked on the original this is possible. If you have a more complex system we make a small additional charge.
